History
The year 1919 was when Northeastern University established a branch at Providence, Rhode Island which was to become Roger Williams University after 37 years. Then the school at Providence suggests and gives a settlement to separate ways with Northeastern University on 1940. Then it was named Providence Institute of Engineering and Finance. Due to the war outbreak on 1942, the school temporarily closed it doors to its students. But the school recuperates on 1945 and changed its name into YMCA Institute of Engineering and Finance.
The institute was given the permission to grant 2 years associate degrees by the state of Rhode Island on 1948. The year 1956 made a great change for the Institute because the state of Rhode Island made a charter that authorized the Institute to become a 2 years degree granting school and also change its name into Roger Williams Junior College. In 1964, the college tenders the Associate of Arts plus the Associate of Science degrees.
By the 1960s, the institution, still based at the Providence YMCA, developed quickly. Accordingly as a result of that development, the College, now a four-year institution, acquired 80 acres of waterfront land in Bristol and, in 1969, completed building of its new campus.
The Providence Campus sustained to house the business and engineering technology degrees. The new campus in Bristol offered a full liberal arts program leading to the baccalaureate.
To boot, the College presented continuing-education evening programs in both Providence and Bristol campuses. In 1992, the Board of Trustees voted to alter the name of the institution to Roger Williams University.
